Latin America hosted Novembre Numérique, a regional digital event focused on the development of video games and esports, highlighting the role of women.
There were conferences and esports tournaments in the most renowned disciplines, with live streaming broadcasts.
From November 10 to 14, the initiative was present in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay, organized by the French Embassy in Buenos Aires. “The objective was to encourage the participation of women in the video game industry,” stated the coordinators through a press release.
The Argentine Association of Esports and Video Games (DEVA) also joined, hosting a tournament of the popular game Free Fire with teams of up to four players. Additionally, there was an invitational tournament for League of Legends, which had its regional final on the 14th of the current month. The streaming broadcast with renowned casters was another highlight.
The Roundtable project (November 10 and 12, starting at noon) included panel discussions featuring various industry leaders. Themes such as “Art and Video Games – New Imaginaries, New Formats” were discussed, with the participation of Margherita Balzeran, Luján Oulton, and Ingrid Peñailillo.
The second presentation, “Pioneers in Video Games,” was led by Estefanía Romero-Cors, Jehanne Rousseau, Micaela Mantegna, and Amanda Mareco.
Video game development was also part of the Game Jam Cono Sur 2021. The National University Guillermo Brown (UNAB), located in Burzaco, Buenos Aires Province, through its Creative Campus, had developer groups tasked with creating a video game guided by various professionals. The activity took place between November 12 and 14.
“The goal of this event was to create a strong bond between students and video game developers within the Southern Cone, provide competition opportunities, and raise awareness about the industry.
The French Embassies and all partner organizations of the project understood that gender equality is a priority and an urgency, no longer needing to be demonstrated, and whose violence is visible in the world of video games. Therefore, the activities focused especially on gender.
In such an unequal world and environment, it is essential to provide visibility platforms for women as players, designers, and entrepreneurs,” concluded the organization.
